ASSAB Grant Opportunities, 2025
ASSAB 2025 Student Research Grants
The Australasian Society for the Study of Animal Behaviour is committed to supporting behavioural research within the Australasian region, with an emphasis on providing opportunities for students. In 2025, ASSAB will support innovative research by providing $2,500 (AUD) towards research expenses for particularly promising projects and students undertaking research in the Australasian region.
About the Awards
- Up to 2 Grant Awardees, each receiving $2,500 (AUD)
- Up to 2 Highly Commended applications (no financial award)
The grant can be used for research costs and associated travel costs (e.g. conference, workshops, research lab visits).
Both Grant Winners and Highly Commended applicants will receive free registration for the next annual ASSAB Conference following the year of their award, at which Grant Winners will be invited to report on their project via spoken presentation.
How to Apply
Applicants are required to complete a research proposal (download here) detailing the significance, structure, and timeline of the proposed research and then submit this by completing a brief form (submit here). If you have any trouble uploading your research proposal, please email it in PDF format to grants@assab.org. The closing date for applications in 2025 is 7th September, 2025

Selection Criteria & Assessment
Grants are blindly assessed by a panel of ASSAB Councillors or, where required, independent experts, chaired by the Grants Officer. All assessors are experienced researchers, but not experts in every area of animal behaviour, so please describe your project clearly.
- Quality of the research proposed (novelty, research plan, experimental design)
- Likelihood of delivering within the expected time frame
- Potential benefit to both the project and the lead researcher from ASSAB funding
Applications seeking funds for work that should be covered by your institution or a research council are not favourably viewed. The decision of the ASSAB assessment panel is final.
