ASSAB Indigenous Student Membership Support Scheme: Supporting Indigenous Tertiary Students in Animal Behaviour Research
The Board of the Australasian Society for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASSAB) is committed to fostering equity, inclusion, and Indigenous representation within our community. To help address the underrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in animal behaviour science, ASSAB is pleased to introduce a scheme granting free membership to Māori, Pacific Islander, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Our intention is to support Indigenous undergraduate and postgraduate scholars across Australasia who are studying animal behaviour or closely aligned behavioural disciplines. By removing financial barriers to membership, ASSAB aims to encourage Indigenous participation, visibility, and leadership, while also honouring the diverse knowledge systems that strengthen the study of animal behaviour.
Eligibility and Nomination Guidelines
- Māori, Pacific Islander, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander postgraduate and undergraduate students (Honours, Masters, or PhD) with a research focus or interest in animal behaviour are eligible.
- Students must be of Māori, Pacific, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent.
- Students can self-nominate themselves by sending a short description (2-4 sentences) of their research or animal behaviour interest, the program they are currently enrolled in, and its duration.
OR
- Any supervisor or academic staff member at a tertiary institution in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, or the Pacific may nominate a student by sending a brief (2–4 sentence) description of the student’s research and its relevance to the study of animal behaviour.
- We encourage current ASSAB members to submit nominations on behalf of students, with their approval.
- Successful nominees will receive free ASSAB membership for each year they are enrolled in their undergraduate (up to three years) or postgraduate programme (up to one year for Honours, two for a Masters degree, and up to four for a PhD), dated from the time of award. Students nominated part-way through their degree will receive free membership for the remainder of that degree.
The ASSAB Board will review nominations on a rolling basis. The scheme will be reviewed annually to ensure it continues to meet the needs of Indigenous students and aligns with ASSAB’s commitments to equity and inclusion. Please send any enquiries and nominations to connect@assab.org
